JMT Leadership Summit 2025
What an Effective Leader Provides
It is important to know what good leadership looks like. Effective leaders must give their team three things: purpose, direction, and motivation. When a supervisor brings these to the table, their team can flourish.
Purpose
Providing your team with a purpose is making sure that they understand the reason their tasks need to be done. By providing team members with the task’s context, you will ideally instill a desire to complete the task beyond “it’s just my job” or “I’m just doing what I’m told.”
Direction
Providing direction means making sure that each of your team members knows exactly what their roles and responsibilities are. This means prioritizing tasks, assigning responsibility, and making sure the work is of an appropriate standard. However, it is important to still give your team members room to show initiative and creativity by not over-managing them.
Motivation
Providing motivation is making sure your team has the willpower and initiative to be able to accomplish the mission. Providing motivation can take the form of aligning a team member’s goals with the group’s goals. It can also take the form of ensuring that your team is doing quick and effective work in tense situations. One critical way to provide your team with motivation is to set a strong, personal example for them to follow. When they trust that what you want is best for them, your team will follow you readily.
